ROBERT VANCE WOOD, 91 of Big Springs, passed away February 24, 2019, at the Sedgwick County Memorial Hospital in Julesburg, CO.
Bob was born April 4, 1927, at Big Springs, Nebraska to Clarence Isaac and Jenny Maude (Miller) Wood. He graduated from Big Springs High School with the class of 1944 and was subsequently called to serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a radio specialist.
Following Bob's discharge from the service, he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and eventually returned home to Big Springs where he farmed. On August 29, 1949, Bob married Vivian L. Farlin at the United Methodist Church in Big Springs, and their union was blessed with four children, Marcia, Barry, Brent, and Melissa. The couple remained in the Big Springs area where Bob primarily farmed. He had also opened a small radio shop in Big Springs, which he owned and operated for a short time. Bob would later transition into a job with KN Energy, which he did for the next 39 years. He would retire in 1992, at the age of 65.
Bob held a diversity of interests and talents. He was a longtime pilot, and even taught his sons to fly, which was something that was very special to him. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, gardening, and cooking. Bob was always trying something new in the kitchen, even finding recipes on the internet. Whatever Bob seemed to do, he seemed to excel. Bob certainly lived up to his part as being a member of the greatest generation.
Bob was preceded in death by his son, Brent; and brothers, Daryl and Bruce.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian of Julesburg; children, Marcia (Ray) Palser of Scottsbluff, Barry (Ann) Wood of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Melissa (Jim) Grogan of Minnetonka, MN; grandchildren, Kristen Palser, Mindee (Marc) Rowan, Brian (Amy) Palser, Emily (Matthew) Wheeler, Sarah (Mike) Premich, Elizabeth (Andy) Sutter, Rachel & Isaac Wood, Erin, Joseph, Suzanna, & Vivian Grogan; great-grandchildren, Shelby, Colby, & Carlee Rowan, Jude, Ruby, & Max Palser, Sophia, Mitchell, Eva, Eleanor, & Luke Wheeler, Penelope & William Premich, Lincoln & Callahan Sutter; sister, Mary Krems of Big Springs; brother, Edgar (Shirley) Wood of Fruita, CO; along with many other relatives and friends.
