Phyllis Marguerite Vary

Phyllis Marguerite Vary, 82 of Julesburg, CO, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2024 at her home in Julesburg, CO, following a courageous battle with cancer. A Funeral Service will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Grace Baptist Church in Julesburg, with her beloved husband, Pastor Leighton Vary officiating. Phyllis was born on June 27, 1942 in Panzi, Belgian Congo, to missionaries H. Elvin and Mildred Peters. She married Leighton Vary on May 29, 1964 while she was in nursing school in New York, and he was in the Army. He is currently the pastor of Grace Baptist Church.

One of her favorite stories from childhood is the move back to the United States, which was handled by a series of plane rides with soldiers returning from WWII. On one of the planes, she was seated by the window, and the window fell out. She was caught by her father, who put the window back in with the help of a steward. A soldier offered them candy, but she and her siblings refused, because it wasn't something they were familiar with, and she remembered that it upset the soldiers.

She is survived by her husband, Leighton Vary; her children Lisa Stoltenburg of Pennsylvania, Susan Folmer, Eric Vary, Nicholas Vary, all of Julesburg, and Leighton Vary of Fort Collins, CO; her older brother Pierre Peters of California and Ronald Peters of Oregon. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
