Jon Atkins

Jon William Atkins, of Julesburg, CO, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023. He was born in Dodge City, KS, to Juanita Joy & Earl Leland Atkins on December 31, 1961. He was raised by his single mother along with his grandparents, Charles & Juanita Foulks.

Jon grew up in many places, such as Eads, Hugo, and Manitou Springs, CO, before he returned to Dodge City, KS, in junior high, where he remained a classmate in the class of 1980. While in school, Jon had a job at the South Dodge drive-in theater, which he enjoyed and talked about often.

He met Edwina Brown & her daughter Brandy in Fort Lyon, CO, where he owned his own little store in 1981. After they moved back to Dodge, they were wed on June 25, 1982. They welcomed three children of their own, Melissa Ann, David Allen, and April Wine. In 2003, Jon moved his high school sweetheart, Vickie Sandlin, to Julesburg along with son, Kiefer "Blayne" Richards. They wed in October 2003.

Jon worked for Great Western Sugar before the factory shut down; he also worked for Kenneth Kinnie at Kinnie Grain. He last worked for the Town of Julesburg before purchasing J&J Liquor along with his mother in April of 2000.

He was a devoted father & grandfather and a mentor to many.

Jon was preceded in death by his mother, Joy, grandparents Charles & Juanita Foulks, and cousin Charley. He leaves behind daughters Melissa Ferguson (Carl Adams) of Julesburg and April Atkins (Jerome Jaeger) of Amherst, CO. Grandchildren Riley Ferguson, Payton Ferguson, and Peyton Adams. Caretaker: Brenda Menster, Sister Dana (Martin) Lock/Coyle, nephew Lucas (Dory) Coyle of California. His Uncle Harley Foulks of Garden City, KS, along with many cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Jon's honor all day on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at J&J Liquor, located at 420 West 1st Street in Julesburg. There will be a box provided for cards or notes for anyone who would like to share a fond memory of him. One last drink for Jon will be provided to all who attend. Jon's two daughters will be at the Liquor Store in the afternoon.
