Dorothy was born on March 10, 1947, in Julesburg, CO, to Frank and Connie Garcia. She was the 2nd of 10 siblings. She grew up in Ovid and Julesburg, CO, as well as Ogallala, NE. Growing up as the second oldest, she was never afraid to get dirty and show her brothers who was in charge. They would make make-shift Go-Karts and race around the cemetery, at times even crashing since they had little control on which way they would go. Once even crashing hard while she had a young Hank with her.
Often joining the boys to play football, especially at Thanksgiving, where she would just run through each of her brothers, that is, until they all teamed up to stop her. This continued into adulthood, one year she broke her wrists while she wore Dan's size 13 shoes. She enjoyed messing with her little brothers and when their parents were away on Friday nights, she would dress them up in girls' clothes whether they liked it or not. Her brothers found ways to get her back though, often hiding dishes under the sink when it was her turn to clean so that when their mom came home, she would yell at her for all the dishes that got missed. She was a great athlete in her day, playing basketball and volleyball throughout high school, playing softball until she was almost 9 months pregnant with her first son.
After graduating high school, she worked at TRW for 3 years before moving to Boulder, Co, where she attended the University of Colorado, following her brothers to the big city and to keep an eye on them.
While working as a part-time babysitter during school, she met Jose Sr. They soon married in 1975 after having their first born, Jose Jr. They were married for 13 years, in which they were blessed with two more children during their marriage: Beatrice and Francisco Sr. before getting a divorce. They remained great friends until his passing in 2009.
She also worked as a secretary in Boulder, worked in Manufacturing at IBM, Special Ed Teacher, Spanish Translator, Sunday School Teacher, as well as some retail work. She also worked at Señor Miguel's (Efrain's) before beginning work at Head Start where she worked for 25 years, teaching many kids in the Alvarado Village neighborhood where she lived. While working at Head Start, she went to night school and got her CDA certificate. She loved working with kids, so following her retirement from Head Start, she became a part-time bus driver for the Learning Center, often taking her grandchildren to eat McDonald's breakfast.
She loved to color, be it on her phone on an app, or the good old-fashioned way with her collection markers and crayons. She had two phones to keep her busy and she loved to play her games while she relaxed throughout the day. She had a big collection of crossword puzzles that also kept her busy. Every morning, she would always have her favorite game shows on: The Price is Right, Let's Make a Deal, The Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy; followed by her favorite soap operas: The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and The Days of Our Lives. Last but certainly not least, she loved to spend time with her family; be it with her siblings, her children, grandchildren and more recently, her great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Connie; brother Tom, and sisters Luisa and Susie.
She is survived by her brothers John, Dan (Rose), Sam and Luis; sisters Joanne (Louis) and Carol (Joe); children Jose Jr. (Vanessa), Beatrice (Adrian Sr.), Francisco Sr. (Hope); grandchildren Lizeth (Marco), Adrian Jr., Lola, Biatriz (Efrain), Jose Angel , Francisco Jr., Isa, Gabi, and Maya; great-grandchildren: Fabian and Efrain Adrian; as well as her grand-dog Sugar.
